I pray earnestly that our gracious Lord may be pleased to bless this little book, to help those who seek to know Him fully. I pray still more earnestly that He would, by whatever means, make the multitudes of His dear children who are still living divided lives, to see how He claims them wholly for Himself, and how the wholehearted surrender to abide in Him alone brings the joy unspeakable and full of glory. --Andrew Murray

So many Christians, instead of accepting God's invitation to enter His throne room, stand alone outside the door, uncertain and ashamed. Christ beckons them to His banqueting table and offers them a room in His house, but they foolishly give up the glory of the life He has offered. They come to Jesus as Redeemer but never go beyond the doorway to abide in Him and experience the unspeakable joy of dwelling with the King of kings.

Andrew Murray knew what it meant to be continually in the Father's presence. Read these thirty-one heart-searching readings and learn how to live daily in closer communion and fellowship with Him. Accept God's invitation and live in His blessing and glory instead of shuffling your feet at the gate.

"Abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming." --1 John 228

About the Author
Andrew Murray (May 9, 1828 – January 18, 1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. He considered missions to be "the chief end of the church." Murray began writing on the Christian life for his congregation as an extension of his local pastoral work, but he became internationally known for his books, such as Abide in Christ.

As we baby boomers reach retirement age and begin to downsize and look back on our lives, we might feel a lostness, a discontent. This was a good read for me as I have neared the retirement milestone. Written in 1888, the wording of this book is a bit complex for today's ear, and requires some concentration. The flowery language is both enhanced and complicated by the narrator's accent. Yet it seemed that these two things, accent and flowery prose, had the effect of making me concentrate more on the deceptively simple message: to abide in Christ. It should not be so hard to grasp the principle and apply it to our lives, yet the author, living in the post-Civil war era, felt the same difficulties we do today: an inability to be quiet, still, and simply abide in Christ. It is repetitious in theme, but how do we become fluent on the piano? Repetition. Drills. The same must apply to our grasp of a concept, because after listening to the entirety of the book during a long drive, it gave such an awareness of my failure to abide. An excellent treatise on reflection, pondering, and waiting on the Lord. Simple as the gospel, yet so hard for the flesh to apply. Chuckle: that moment when you think he said 'holy' but it was really 'wholly':)

Abide in Christ [Illustrated] edition by Andrew Murray Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I want to write something, but I am dumbfounded. I had read this a long time ago when I was new to the faith. But now after all these years, much of it bitter and disappointing, these messages hit me like a ton of bricks. And it's not that I haven't heard any of this before. God knows, the hundreds and hundreds of sermons and teachings I've been subjected to. Yet, at this stage of my life, and the way Murray laid out the sequence of his theme, plus that sweet style of expression, the book really spoke to me in a deep and relevant way. In a way that I can't pass off glibly and say something like, "that was interesting," or "that was anointed," and then move on to whatever might be next. No. If what he says is true, I have stop right now and deal with what he says. Make a life-changing decision. Like I said, I had read this before, and so many Christian books, both old and new, heavy and lite, so much so that I've gotten sick of the genre, but this reading of the book has turned me inside out. I feel devastated, but in a good way. Now pardon me while I consider some life and death issues.
The book by Andrew Murray is supposed to be very good.
However I gave this book only one star for effect This is not the original text. It has been edited for the modern reader. I don't doubt they did a good job in keeping the original meaning, but I wanted the original text specifically -- and there is nothing in the description which says anything about it being edited.
I stumbled onto Andrew Murray while searching for spiritual reading that brings me ever closer to Christ and knowing him. This book exceeded my hopes. It's a beautiful poetic love story of abiding in Christ. I would read a sentence or paragraph and then reflect on what it meant. I have grown spiritually from this book and in parallel read the Bible. Abiding in Christ transforms our life and thoughts. I have also read his book "Teach us to Pray". Both books have some editing issues and sometimes a word doesn't fit but you will find many treasures for the soul if you take the time to read it slowly and truly understand the meaning.
Understanding the grace of Christ's supply and peace that He has for those that abide in Him is the most wonderful of realizations. It isn't what we do that counts for anything, it is what He does in us and through us because we abide in Him and He in us. Pride and self have no place in a fruitful life that glorifies God. Jesus said it all in John 6 and 15. If we could just grasp that our position was secured by the Father's will in drawing us to Christ and our condition is enabled and supported by Christ as our supply. Murray does an amazing job of bringing these truths to the forefront and stating their sufficiency and necessity for all true believers. Life is Christ and nothing else both in the here and now as well as the there and then. Murray makes this necessity abundantly clear in this totally Biblical meditation book. Everyone who reads this book will be blessed in the understanding it solicits from our hearts.
The author of this well known book among men and women who want to learn to grow closer to the Lord by learning to meditate died in 1917. But his words will continue to help seekers develop a closer relationship if that is what they seek.

It takes some time to get used to the writer's style, especially the very long paragraphs, but the message is worth the extra effort and the truths Murray presents can be life-changing.

I knew Andrew Murray wrote often about the deeper walk with Christ, and through the years I had heard this title mentioned as a helpful one. Recently I saw a recommendation for it in a book on Christian Meditation. I borrowed it through InterLibraryLoan. It was so helpful to me that once I finished it, I immediately ordered my own copy. I want to re-read it and highlight passages that spoke to me so I can ponder them until they sink into my mind and remain there.

.
JOHN 15 tells us to abide. So simple yet so profound. This spiritual sage of the late 1800's inspired, challenged and sent me on a journey to abide in Christ. Murray unlocks the mystery of how we abide in Christ. Asking Jesus help will never do. That approach relies too much on me. We abide in Christ the same way we come to Christ, by faith in God.
I love this book. The only slight drawback is Murray's use of "the King's English." But even that proved profitable as I reread key sections two or three times and gained a deeper understanding.
If you're a follower of Christ and your tired of sins grip on your life, this book might hold the key to freedom.
