This is the most comprehensive book on Italian airplanes of the World War II period that I have found. It is organized by manufacturer. Within a given chapter, the airplanes are then described by assigned manufacturer’s designations in numerical order. So if you want to look up the particulars for a specific model of airplane, you need to know already the name of the manufacturer – you can’t look it up by type such as fighter or bomber.Each chapter contains a brief description of the history of the manufacturing company. There are then technical descriptions and design histories of the airplanes produced by that manufacturer. In a few cases, the author admits that not much is known about a particular aircraft—only a photo with a few notes apparently exist.
The book describes airplanes designed and manufactured by 18 major manufacturers and, at the end of the book, a few minor ones. This leads to an interesting observation: the Italian Air Force (Regia Aeronautica) and the various private and government-owned civil airlines generally purchased a small number of several models from every manufacturer over the fifteen years covered by the book (1930 – 1945). Typically only a few dozen of a given model was manufactured; very few were produced in the hundreds and only a rare few were manufactured in the thousands. From what I have been able to determine, only two models were produced in numbers greater than 1000: approximately 1700 Fiat CR 42 biplane fighters and 1300 Savoia – Marchetti SM79 three-engined bombers. This led to real crisis when Italy erroneously entered World War II in June of 1940. The airplane industry could not even produce enough airplanes to replace losses, let alone produce enough to increase Regia Aeronautica strength.
Another observation from reading the descriptions of the various airplanes is that the Italian aircraft industry still used wood and mixed wood / steel tubing / aluminum skinning construction even into the early 1940s. Aluminum monocoque construction was developed very late compared to the major aviation industrial powers such as the United States, Britain, and Germany. Italian industry performed OK during the late 1920s and early 1930s when those countries didn’t spend much money on their respective aviation industries. But Italy was still using plywood skinning over steel tube framing when those countries had advanced to aluminum monocoque construction.

This is probably the best book on Italian aircraft of this time period. Covers almost all of the aircraft produced between 1930 and 1945. give specs on most. However it is in the text so you have to look for it. Also has a lot of pictures and line drawings. Also covers prototypes of aircraft that did not go into production.
